microblogging

So, yesterday Google announced it will be Open Sourcing the Jaiku software once it is finished completely migrated over to their App Engine. Yeay! Great! A win for open source. Except they also say they are no longer going to be actively developing it. The service is not shutting down. Maybe there should be a yet at the end of that since they also mention other services being dropped completely. It makes me wonder if Jaiku would have been more popular had they done what I mentioned in this blog post. I guess we will never know. I just hope they continue hosting the Jaiku service once it is open sourced. I'm sure the code will end up in Google Code and will probably be updated or at the very least picked apart by other developers for inclusion in other software.
I guess it is the nature of business to drop support or end of life product that isn't "successful" but in the case of Jaiku I don't think Google really gave it the chance for success.

Speacking of microblogging... Since when did Twitter become a live RSS feed? If I wanted to subscribe to your RSS feed I would. You don't need to blast it into Twitter.

Another Year

So much for 2008. It's over. Out the door. Whatever you want to say it is done. I'm so glad for that. 2008 was probably my least productive year in recent memory. Don't get me wrong I got a lot DONE, but not much of it was what I WANTED to get done. Here's hoping 2009 is better.

Interestingly, last year was the least I have ever blogged. I've been using Blogger since 2003 and used other software before that. As far as my "online community" there were two things that changed in 2008: 1) I joined both Jaiku and Twitter. This could have contributed to my lack of blog posts had I actually USED them. 2) I joined Facebook. This one I can see as I do spend a lot of time online there but still haven't used it as a blog so much. Beyond the occasional status update I haven't really used that part of Facebook. So, that's that as they say. I still don't know why the lack of blogs last year. A TON of things happened last year that I could have blogged about but just didn't.

I guess that early post ins't very good now as I haven't done what I said in it. :) Maybe this year will be better.
